The biggest news in luxury travel next year won’t come from a new hotel or resort, but from an aircraft. Luxury cruise line Crystal has reimagined its flagship Boeing 777-200LR to accommodate 88 travelers with a lounge and bar, then offer 14- to 28-day around-the-world or international itineraries starting in 2017. The company’s subsidiary Crystal AirCruises has also started offering private charters and what it calls “air cruises.”
The wide-body private jet typically flies wealthy passengers around the world on private charters and air cruise itineraries, with some journeys reported to cost more than $150,000. But with demand for travel falling and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, many companies are using their planes to fly cargo charters, Business Insider reports. Crystal joins scores of aerospace companies that have offered their aircraft for medical supply cargo missions.
A fleet of converted 777s from airlines such as Southwest, Virgin America and Delta are currently operating passenger-only flights to deliver medical supplies to affected countries. In addition to the passenger cabin, the 777s have been outfitted with storage compartments and loading bays where pharmaceuticals, disinfectants and other medical supplies can be loaded. Unlike some airlines, Crystal will not transport medical supplies in the passenger cabin, instead storing them in its belly hold or on board containers or pallets. As of March 1, the airline has already completed three contracted cargo charters and a dozen others that are close to signing. It’s also working with group charter clients such as the National Hockey League and an Ultra High Net Worth individual. It is also considering group charters for other sports events and other destination-centric itineraries.

Crystal’s 777 was initially purchased from an Italian firm that specializes in VIP transportation and converted to cargo at Greenpoint’s Moses Lake facility. It was refurbished and reconfigured with a large lounge with custom coved ceilings, sofas, dining tables, a full-service bar and a branded glass wall that showcases the aircraft’s logo.
The first trip with the new plane, which has a maximum capacity of 88 people, will be from Los Angeles to Shanghai on May 4. It’s the only scheduled trip on the calendar so far, but Crystal says it is receiving interest from other groups. The airline will start with two- to four-week itineraries and plan to add longer journeys as demand grows. Prices haven’t been announced yet. But the company is optimistic that its specialized aircraft will help it survive the blip in passenger travel.
