In a bid to regularise over 1,700 illegal colonies in Delhi, the Central Government launched the Pradhan Mantri Unauthorised Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojana (PM-UDAY) in October 2019. Reports indicate that over 40 lakh people live in the unauthorised colonies in Delhi. The properties in these clusters, whether in the form of plots of land or built-up areas, are held through a Will or a General Power of Attorney (GPA) or an agreement to sell or via the payment and possession of documents.
