The good news is, a depleted AirTag doesn't have to stay that way.

Apple allows AirTag users to replace the device's battery before it dies, keeping the device functioning when needed. To replace the battery, you will need a spare CR2032 3V lithium coin cell battery. You can find these batteries in most electronics stores as well as some watch stores and pharmacies. Apple recommends avoiding CR2032 with a bitter coating. This coating may prevent the battery from forming a proper connection with the AirTag's contact points, causing it to not function properly.

Assuming you have a battery, follow these steps to insert it into the AirTag.

Locate the polished stainless steel battery cover on the AirTag and gently push it down.
Turn the cap counterclockwise until it can no longer turn.

Lift the cover and remove the battery from the AirTag.

Place a new 3V CR2032 lithium coin cell battery into the open slot with the positive terminal facing you. Your AirTag should make a sound indicating that the battery has successfully connected.

Replace the battery cover.

While holding the cap, turn it clockwise until it stops moving.

Your AirTag should now be transmitting again. Open the Find My app and you should see it reappear in your project list.

Keep your AirTags running
The battery pre-installed in the AirTags is not long-lasting. It only provides service for about a year before it runs out, but if you need to use your AirTags regularly, your service may wear out faster.
